36 year old poet, Edgar Rowley was born in 1884 to Richard Rowley and Victoria Rowley. His childhood was a fair one. Nothing extraordinary occured. The only thing that made his childhood difficult was being an only child, poor in the grand state of New York. His Father was a poet and mother stayed at home. They didn’t have enouch income to support themselves but they managed to make it work. His life as a poor child made him see how devestating it was for those that were poor and sick so he made it his goal to learn medicine and treat those that lived as he lived. The first 18 years of his life were simple and happy.

In 1902 he decided to pursue his goal to become a doctor in medicine. Although his family barely had enough money to get along they decided that they would do anything they could to make it work. Once out of high schoool, he moved out of New York and he headed to Bowdoin’s Medical School of Maine. There he met a fellow by the name of Edward Moon. With so much in common, except for the fact that Edward comes from a wealthy family, they quickly became best of friends. Edgar was lost in his studies and was on his way to becoming a great doctor. When he wasn’t working on his education, Edgar was working in one of his two jobs, one as butcher and the other was a part time construction worker. Life was beginning to get a bit difficult when he met her.

4 years in to his education he met a youg lady named Amber Elliott, and it was love at first sight for the both of them. Unfortunately Edward was also in love with her. Edward kept his infatuation a secret and remained good friends with the couple. The three of them had the best years of their lives together. Edward and Edgar were maintaining good grades and were receiving acclaims for their studies in the field of medicine. Even with practically no time on Edgar’s hands he still managed to make things work. No matter how hard life was he could always find security and comfort with Amber. Amber and Edgar were on their way to marriage and everything in Edgar’s life was exactly where he wanted it to be, and then tragedy struck.

The year was 1908. The First day of the first month when Edgar received a telegram explaining that there was a horrible accident in which his parents died. With his parents deceased he had no way of making it to the end of his path. To make matters worse he was laid off from both of his jobs. This string of bad luck broke Edgar down into a deep deppression. Unable to afford medical school he had no choice but quit one year short of graduating. His friendship to Edward and relationship to Amber began to strain. He then moved to Portland, Maine with Amber.

By 1909 he had hit rock bottom. It was in this funk that his poetic career began with, “The Fire that Burned Through Everything I Was”, which began a series of dark poems that would gain him some fame. After losing his chance in gaining a medical degree, he picked up after his father and began to write. He was, however, a very poor man. His recognition did not come with riches. Amber’s parents, who disliked Edgar from the start for not coming from a wealthy family, began to intrude in his relationship with their daughter. Since Edgar began to distance himself from Amber, and began to ignore his friendship with Edward, it wasn’t hard for the two of them to find comfort in each other. Amber’s parents, Jacob and Annabeth Elliot, finally convinced her to accept Edwards engagement.

Edward and Amber were married in 1910. By now Edgar’s poems becam increasingly violent. He became antisocial and kept himself in seclusion. In 1911 he wrote the last poem he would ever write, “The Death of My Former Self”. It became widely renowned. In it he describes in explicit detail the murder of a married couple and the wife’s parents. It spoke of mutilation, rape, and death. It was so sick and twisted that Jacob Elliot paid to have Edgar committed before his words became real. Edgar, suffering from a mental breakdown, was then institutionalized.

In 1912, Edgar was in Portland, Maine’s Lunatic Asylum. There he met a Dr. Wayland. Dr. Wayland would treat Edgar and try to rehabilitate him. Edgar who was devestated by the loss of his parents, love and best friend needed a guide more than ever. Dr. Wayland became like a father to then 28 year old Edgar. Edgar began to respect him and the 8 years that he would be put away for his mental condition were made easy by this relationship. Dr. Wayland believed in Edgar and therefore, Edgar began to believe in himself. However, Mr. and Mrs. Elliot were paying good money to keep him locked away. Dr. Wayland had no choice but to deny Edgar’s release.

With no way out, he turned to a man name J.J.. He met this insane drifter 5 years into his sentence and became good buddies. They helped each other out and could rely on one another. They became like brothers. One night Edgar explained to him the situation that had occured before he was put away. J.J. seemed upset at what had occured and revealed to Edgar that he had a way to escape the asylum and that he wouldn’t go without him. J.J. became a fan of Edgar’s poems and literary works and swore that he would remain by his side until the day that one of them died. For 5 years, Edgar sat on the idea of escaping. On the first day of the first month in 1920 he decide to get out one way or the other. Freedom will not be denied to him anymore.

Edgar and J.J. both escaped. A month later the remains of Ambers parents were found. They were savagely murdered in their home in Portland, Maine. The method in which they were killed could be described in vivid detail in a poem that was written 9 years before this incident. Oddly enough the same ending was carved into whatever flesh remained intact, “Relinquish your soul to me, for only death shall set you free.” Authorities believe that the man who wrote the poem, “The Death of My Former Self”, Edgar Rowley is responsible for the murders. They assume that he is now on route to New York to search for Edward and Amber Moon.
